Carl,

Something seems really amiss with this one. Is the
0.5 inch move a one time error, or is the 0.5 inch
a cummulative error?

If a one time movement, not sure on what would cause
that except a programming error.

If a series of small errors, then check the following:

I suspect either a bad cable or connection. Admitted
the DOS machine might also be at fault, as might the
stepper driver. First check the cable, especially at
the ends of the cable.

Next, check the drivers to insure they are not getting
too hot during operation. If the Z-stage works fine on
smaller runs (shorter operating time), but seems to allow
errors after a longer operation, the drive maybe heat
sensitive.

A simple hardware checker called "Check It" can be used
to test the machine and to insure the parallel port is
fully functional. Look at http://www.smithmicro.com
and search for Utilities or CheckIt to find the hardware
test suite. [I think I bought the tools at CompUSA...
been a while, so not sure]
