Chris, Dave
You and Dave are heading in different directions. You are using
steppers and a G201 and Dave is going with servos and a G320
or G340. In his case he will hook up the encoders to the drives and
in your case you need an encoder interface card which plugs into an
open ISA slot on your computer. That can be had from Dan Mauch at
Camtronics or you can roll your own. The schematic is on the web
somewhere, and the chips can be ordered from USDigital. I would
recomend getting EMC running without the encoders first, then,
when and if you decide you are happy with EMC, you can add the
encoders later. You may decide you really don't need them since you
are running a stepper system. Dave on the other hand has no choice,
since he is using servos.
Dave, forgot to mention, Since you are running a plasma table you
may wish to be very careful when shielding the encoder wires as the
plasma torch may generate lots of noise (don't really know if they do,
but it seems like they would) Also did you read the info on the Plasma
Cam website about arc initiation and noise?
