Hi Lee:
Are you SURE it's 1/2" dia and 12 TPI??
Unless it's an old old old British tool it ain't gonna be Whitworth.
M13 x2 is awfully close to this size.
Lots of people miscount if they are counting TPI freehand instead of using a
pitch gauge.
So; look at the manufacturers nameplate.
If it's an American or Canadian made tool it's likely 1/2:13 NC which is
standard.
If it's Oriental, Aussie or Brit, it's likely metric; either M12x2 or M13x2
or something of that ilk.
If it's Pakistani, anyone's guess (I've seen both thread systems mixed on a
single machine.)

PS: If it is a bastard size, then you can make a nut very quickly on the
lathe by single point threading it.
Make it out of free machining brass or leadloy.
I wouldn't bother making or buying a tap; it's way too much work or expense
in my opinion.
A job like this is about 20 minutes work. I can't go to the store and back
in that time.
