To be ground ON centers is like turning a piece of stock on a lathe
between centers. With centerless grinding, the round stock is feed
between 2 grinding wheels and allowed to rest in the valley between
them. The grinding wheels are not opposed to each other rather they
are fixed side by side and one directly in front of the other.

Does that make sense? It's one of thoses things that is better
understood when seen.
