Hi John,
I'd say the accuracy of the finish depends on the quality of the machine,
the alignment of the head/tailstock, the ability of the operator and
numerous other factors. At any rate thats the technique we used in
gunsmithing school to make chambering reamers.
The DreamMachine is going slow at present. I've been tied up writing code
for machine parts for a lot of wax injection molds for parts for rifle
actions. However, for the last week I've been actually cutting parts for an
adjustable steel mold I'll be using in about a week or so to cast a lot of
aluminum plate. The aluminum plate will be used on the rifle molds,
DreamMachine parts, my "mirror image" semi-inletting machine, patterns for
artwork and other projects.
I've recently started revising the DreamMachine design....but not by much.
Basically, I've figured out a way to make all but a couple of the main
castings exactly the same for greater interchangeability as well as make it
much easier to expand the machine in the future if desired.
I found out I can use those 1" ACME screws Dougs been talking about and
still be able tor replace them with ball "off the shelf" ball screws if
desired. I can also use the same size acme screws for all the longitudinal
asis (again for greater interchangability of parts) and install handwheels
on the end opposite the drive motors (yep...interchangeable
servos/steppers).
I'm also going to design a bolt on automatic tool changer for it. The new
revisions should make this a simple task.
