Happy holidays to you too.

How accurate a pice of stock is as it comes from the manufacturer will
depend on the manufacturing specifications. I'm sure there are centerless
ground items available that are not out of round as suggested. I'm also
sure that the higher degree of precision, the higher the cost.

Several things should be borne in mind:
1. Do you NEED centerlessground stock?
2. How much precision are you willing to pay for?
3. Is it worth your time to do it yourself?

Doing it yourself is certainly the way to go if your more interested in
saving time over out of pocket costs. With a good lathe having the centers
set up properly, and a grinder attachment, you can certainly produce highly
accurate ground parts. That's probably what I'll have to do when I get
around to building the spindles for my DreamMachinePrototype.

Another advantage to using the lathe is you can mount a grinder on the lathe
compound and grind internal tapers....something a centerless grinder won't
do.

If using the lathe as a grinder, be sure to cover all the ways and other
wearable parts as much as possible to prevent grinding dust from getting on
them and clean the machine thouroughly after doing any grinding.

For best work, true up the grinding wheel(s) often and take light cuts.
