A bar that is ground between centers has a hole drilled in each end. The
bar is supported between these centers (like on a lathe) and rotated while
being ground.

For extremely long parts and very small diameter parts, this method is
impractical and sometimes impossible. Therefore machines were developed
which support the stock between drive rollers while the piece is being
ground. This method does not require the use of predrilled holes in the
ends and has other manufacturing benefits.
