Alan I would think the easiest way to do the egg would be to treat it as a cylinder and have a spring loaded pen for the Z variations of the eggs surface.

My second choice would be to digitize the form. One set of points along the longest axis would be all the probing needed, and then use an arc-spline of the points to create the template for the extrusion.
Draw the design in the flat, then use the extrusion template to create a 3D unrolled representation of the surface. You could then use the Z-A swap trick to develop the G-code for the surface, or else, use Vector's Wrap cylinder to develop the 3D surface, from which you could either draw X-Y-Z coordinates using about 1/4 of the surface and indexing, or else use the VectorPlus rotary 4th axis to generate the entire drawing path directly from the model.
