stepper pulse generation because their is no ability to do finely
variable rate timing in hardware, so the processor must work overtime
to fake it. A far more primitive microcontroller equipped with
suitable programmable hardware counter/timers can offload the timing
generation, making more processor cycles available for the actual
motion calculations. This is how people were able to build reasonable
performance cnc controls on 8 bit processors, and with high
performance 16 and even 32 bit embedded processors common today, the
task should really not require very expensive hardware.
