I have an enco 8X36 and originally used the fine feed shaft with a
pulley on it driven by a stepper motor. But most quills have about .020
vertical play so for precision depth control it was no good. So I took a
different approach and put a servo motor on my knee. It has zero
backlash but depending on your machine this may be more difficult that
putting a ballscrew on a quill to dive it.

look at trying to drive the quill by placing a pully on the
quill hand feed lever. Though I would still want to be able
to use the machine manualy as well."
