The "pristine sources" are the ones released by the Linux kernel
developers. These are released according to the kernel number scheme,
e.g., 2.2.12. Red Hat has modified these a slight bit so that the RT
patch won't see exact alignment and will break. The modifications are
pretty trivial things, like changes to the Makefile for version control,
but it's enough to make the RT patch break.

I hand-edited one of the RT patches so it would work with Red Hat, but
this was such a pain that I haven't done it again. I get the pristine
sources and overwrite the whole /usr/src/linux tree to start fresh.

You can get the pristine sources from:

www.kernel.org

The 2.2.12 release was about 15 MB. This can take a while to download
through a modem.
