In a recent post, Jan raised the issue of security concerning the EMC
software on a shop floor machine . IMO this issue is common to all pc
based systems but since parts of the EMC must run as root, and now all of
it runs as root in a standard setup, the system is extra vulnerable.

I've got horror stories from years of correcting machine tool problems
caused by squirrly little/big bast***s and bit***s who just couldn't keep
their fingers, screwdrivers, and programming skills out of the works. Hey,
I've created a few myself. Seems to me that there will always be someone
around trying to make a name for themselves by tweeking.

What can we do?
