Hey Doug,
personally I would go the way you mention at the end.
Continue looking for it or make it yourself a through feed cylinder
Hydraulic control for x and Servo for Y and perhaps Z too.
Use the Y movement with timing and a slow ramp.
And the Z with impulses limited to half a thousands of feeding.
My 2 cent.
