Long time ago I had a curious case. With the same indication:
It was that the internal limit switch of the servo was tripped. Somebody
had pulled of the motor moved the ballscrew of the limit and put back
the motor.
Sounds stuppid! But you never know with what kind of former owner you
might have to do it.

Sounds you have an old GE550 control. That thing sucks more current than
the spindle drive. Is absolutely unrealiable and can be changed by an PC
really easy.

Failure search is nasty but you can find it. Start with looking for the
20 something fuses, then pull out boards (one by one at a time) clean up
pins, look for bent pins put it back and the same with the xxx
connectors.
