The FRO on the Optistep is nice in that it uses a potentiometer. There is a
firmware problem on the board that causes the acceleration rate to scale
along with velocity. This is not a serious problem if taken into account
when setting the global acceleration parameter. The real problem with the
Optistep is lack of ramping on both jog mode and feed hold. If you have to
hit feed hold during a G0 move you lose position because the motor
overshoots. The Optistep was apparently designed without considering these
effects on 1150 in.oz. motors.
I bought this system with the intention of migrating it to a 3D router once
I get the servo system running again. Thus far, I am not sure it will serve
that purpose either. The Yeager software looks like it will serve my needs
- just need to get more opinions from those who have used it.
