That's very clever! I suppose that a person with a mill drill could make a clamp-like affair to clamp onto the column and accomplish the same thing. Neat!

Horizontals are far mor rigid than verticals. Most have a lot more
meat designed in and the overarm support counts a lot.
I have a Victoria U2, same as the Elliot U2.
Bed size is 11" x 45" just a bit smaller than a bridgeport but it has
a useable travel of 30" which is a lot more than a bridgy.
I use this for doing toolholders for North Sea boring rigs.
Two 7/8" wide cutters, 1/2" spaced and 1.125" depth of cut, straight
thru in one pass, chips every where {g}

To make any vertical more rigid when using horizontal type cutters
