It is my great pleasure to inform you that I have recently finished such a machine! It is a 4 Axis Horizontal Desktop Milling Machine that I have designed and built over the last two years.

Specifications:
a.. Footprint 3.6 sq. ft.
b.. X Axis Travel = 14 in.
c.. Y Axis Travel = 12 in.
d.. Z Axis Travel = 8 in.
e.. Motion Control System MaxNC CL-2 Servo
I am offering this machine along with Rhino 3-D CAD and DeskProto CAM Software as a complete "Designer's Package" for $4650.

I haven't posted here yet. Been browsing the archives for info. Only

I've been looking at different designs all over the net and am
surprised no one has built a horizontal machine.

Anyone want to offer reasons why not?

If there is some out there, I'd appreciate links to see them.
