Jon,
Have you seen what happens when a list like this goes down for ? day? Do not
underestimate people's dependency on this type of service.
Buying and configuring a server is the easy part. There are many other
issues to consider. For instance:
[ Who will support the server when you are at work, on vacation, Etc.
[ Do you have backup and recovery procedure?
[ Does you computer have built in redundancy?
[ Are you on a UPS?
[ Do you have a backup system/server in the event of a system
failure?
[ How fast can you swap a new system in and recover from backups?
[ Do you know the number of concurrent users accessing the web site
or other list traffic statistics (remember web hits from curious people
wandering through)
[ Is your system sized and configured for this demand?
[ What kind of service level agreement do you have with the ADSL ISP?
[ Will the Home ADSL support this type of usage (most small business
ADSL services have traffic limitations). Most small business ADSL lines can
be easily saturated.
[ Do you have the software and skill set to fend off malicious
attacks? There will be attacks, keeping the server safe can consume a lot of
time
[ Etc.etc etc.
The requirements for a good mail list and website can go on for many pages.
I have seen a number of people and companies underestimate the effort
required. This is a large commitment.
I would hate to see this list compromised because not all of the
requirements have been considered. I enjoy the list too much.

Linux consultants to set it up, and there are no software licenses, either.
