www.encodertech.com has 0.01mm strips and reader heads which
will
give you just less than your 0.0005" resolution. The strips are a
max length of 600mm. If you go to their WWW site it mentions a
12.5CPMM strip and a 12.5CPMM head. Well they also have a non-
documented 25CPMM head that works with the 12.5CPMM strips. I
have
some at home and they work great (specially since I work in mm
here
in Canada) If you want more info let me know and I can tell you
part
numbers etc once I go home.

Now if I can just find a good way of mounting them on my
lathe.....
