They are one and the same and used interchangably.
The 'u' is used to represent the mico symbol which does resemble
a 'u' somewhat. Therefore, uf stands for micro-farad.
MFD is just the three letter abbreviation for the same thing.
Which one is used depends on the manufacturer.
