Right. I found out by trial and error that the control circuitry
needs to be tied across the input lines. At first, when I turned
on my lathe, all the contactors and relays would just rattle and
clack. I changed the input lines around, and everything's fine
now.
Also, I looked into the VFD route, but it would have meant a major
rewiring of my Sharp lathe (coolant pump, F/R switch, motor
contactors, etc.). Having 3-phase power also allows me to run a
lot of other industrial equipment without having to rethink the
issue every time I get a new toy.
