Dale,

You may want to do a little investigative work on those drives.
Anything Compumotor makes with an X in the model number are
smart drives and use the X language. But they usually make a
drive that is similar without the X, which is step and direction.
With the OEM series, such as the OEM 650 and OEM650X
a small plug in board will convert a 650 to a 650X. I did try to
convert a Compumoter SX drive to a Compumotor S drive but
the plug in board example didn't apply in that case. It may appy
in your case though. It helps if you have one of each so you
can compare.
