Given the level of electronic expertise that you are
admitting to. You need a friend.
Look around your neighborhood for a house with wires running
all over the place
or an antenna that is a LOT bigger than a TV antenna. In
that house there will
be an Amateur Radio Operator or HAM Radio operator. They
are usually
very interested in electronic type things and will have the
VOM and probably
know how to use it. They usually do radio as a hobby, so
looking at your
problem would actually be fun for them. It wont cost you
anything, except
a dinner if you want, and might help you. You might get
exactly what you
pay for as well. The tests for amateur radio are getting
away from building
your own stuff and just purchasing commercially made stuff.
I am an OM as
my first radio was a WWII surplus radio that I cobbled
together enough to
get on the air. My father gave me a morse code rig for
christmas my 15th
birthday and said it was the worst mistake he ever made - at
least till he got
his license 20 years later <grin>. There are Ham radio
associations and
clubs in almost every metro area. They will be happy to
teach you the
electronics you need to solve your problem and will try to
get you to become
a Ham as well. If you do, the FCC will give you letters to
add to your name...
