The transistors you will be looking for here are power transistors, not
the little plastic cased 3 leg switching type you mention. These will be
in a metal case that has a roughly 3/4" diameter X 1/10" high metal
button that sits on top of a base plate that has 2 mounting lugs with
screw holes. There will be 2 leads soldered to the board they are
mounted on and the case is the third connection.
