Two main solutions spring to mind:
1) Try a larger belt size, possibly the metric 15mm HTD types.
2) You are only actually using approx 48" of the belt + 1/2 the
circumference of the pulley. The remaining teeth on the belt are never used
so why not cut the shorter belt and extend it with a wire cable. This also
saves money on the idler pulley as it can be a simple grooved wheel rather
than a toothed pulley. This technique seems to work OK on my plasma, using
30mm HTD belt and 5mm steel cable. Mind you I haven't actually cut any steel
with it yet!
