Look for, or ask about, the words, "Hayes compatible". That's almost all of
them. 56KBaud and, "faxmodem", are pluses. "Supra", is one brand, and, "US
Robotics", or, "Telebit", are not unheard of, though the last one I haven't
seen in a while.
