There are (or used to be) quite a few manufacturers of BTR's (Behind The
Reader) tape emulators. The opto isolated lines go between the tape
reader, and the controller, and happily send the signals the machine would
be expecting to see from the tape drive. Bummer is, the software is
usually in the high hundreds (or low thousands) of Dollars (US) for the
package. But, I must say that the ones I've used do an excellent job.
