John: Was this a "halogen" bulb to begin with?

///Nope, I don't think so.

If so, perhaps SOMETHING
happened to let in atmospheric gas which would disrupt the halogen redox
reaction

///Redox is just a reaction in which something is oxidised then used for
reduction, or the other way round. In a blast furnace there is a redox
reaction taking place as the carbon is oxidise which goes on to reduce the
iron oxides to further oxidise the carbon to CO2.

But £50 for a little light-bulb?? SOMEthing is wrong! One should not cost
more than £1.- !

///I think I probably said that not so clearly. What I mean is those mighty
expensive halogen work lamps you can buy, the ones specifically for machine
work. A £50 light bulb on a machine sure would be something to see though
wouldn't it! :)

Sounds like an automobile bulb might fit! Take the
"dead" on by auto-parts shops and ask the gurus behind the counter! If an
"ordinary" incandescent that fits doesn't emit sufficient light, then you
are
kinda "stuck" for a real halogen. They DO emit amazingly more lumens/watt
than ordinary incandescents!

///I ran outside and routed through our car for some light bulbs. I found a
couple but they were all the wrong size (The bayonet was a little too big).
So I smashed the broken one and attached the wires from a new one for a car
head lamp to the old one's bayonet. Hey presto, a kind of would-be machine
light is produced. The output is it isn't amazing. Infact it's not very good
at all as our garage is pretty dark since the lights recently blew in there
for some mysterious reason.

What I was thinking though was L.E.D's! Have you seen the 'new' white light
L.E.D's that are being sold now? They are incredibly bright, it's almost
painful to look at one I have on a key chain that's powered by a single coin
battery. Since my usual lamp takes 12V and 5 watts of power that's 0.41A. I
think I'll have a look round at some of these L.E.D's and see how much it'd
be to put a few of them where my light used to be.

The major draw back of them, if it is one to you I guess, is that the light
they give out does have a somewhat blue colour to it rather than the white /
yellow of a normal light bulb. I think blue was the hardest part of them to
produce for the L.E.D. and when they managed they could make these white
light L.E.D's. Maybe their still fine tuning the balance of blue in the
output.

Regards,
John H.
