John: Was this a "halogen" bulb to begin with? If so, perhaps SOMETHING
happened to let in atmospheric gas which would disrupt the halogen redox
reaction (one which I never understood, yet) and the "slver coloration" is
the metal of the filament itself which has been "sputtered" onto the glass.
A permanent "fix" for that poor light-bulb!

But £50 for a little light-bulb?? SOMEthing is wrong! One should not cost
more than £1.- ! Sounds like an automobile bulb might fit! Take the
"dead" on by auto-parts shops and ask the gurus behind the counter! If an
"ordinary" incandescent that fits doesn't emit sufficient light, then you are
kinda "stuck" for a real halogen. They DO emit amazingly more lumens/watt
than ordinary incandescents!
