The original post mentioned messing with the connections to the motor
windings to convert 6-wire to 8-wire - this is a sure-fire way to trash a
motor if you manage to snip the wrong wire. Not to be advised on any motor
that you care about.

There are also issues related to de-magnetization and swarf ingress - see
Marris's reply earlier.
