It could well be true. In many situations nowadays, magnets are only
actually magnetised after all the other work is done on the product and it
is completely assembled. This is done for a number of reasons but the
commonest are that, by assembling everything first, the makers don't have
too many problems with stray chips and swarf being attracted to the magnets
which makes cleaning the parts prior to assembly so much easier and, in some
cases, it eases shipping considerations. For example if a company here in
Sheffield UK gets an order from a company in the US, they will often send
the 'magnetic' goods over in an unmagnetised state which allows them to do
so by air freight. In the US they will then either have their own equipment
or hire the equipment to magnetise the goods before onward shipping to the
customer. I believe that also, by magnetising such things as motors after
full assembly, they can get a higher field strength in the modern sintered
magnets.
