Yes, there are {USB,FireWire,EtherNet}=>{Parallel,Serial}

or serial. The next version is going to drop the parallel,

motherboard parallel ports are going away. If I can
figure out a cheap way to connect to USB, I will drop
the serial too; again, not because I don't like serial,
but because serial ports are going away.
Yes, old PC's with serial and parallel ports will be
around for a while, but eventually the supply of old
equipment dries up. When was the last time you ran
across a machine with an 8" floppy drive? a 5-1/4"
floppy drive?
