There are cheap USB to Parallel and Serial cables already available. The
control software would have
to be changed to support a read / write to a "file" which is how you write
to a driver in Windows. Linux
I don't know ( or care really ), but I'm sure if Linux has USB driver
support it'll work much the same
way. I've converted some of my own code to write to a parallel port via a
ring 0 driver so it's not
that difficult a change to make in the software.

PCI slots will exist for a while but 5 volt only PCI slots will be extinct
very soon now.

ISA slot only products are dead dead dead. Ahha has a real problem if they
don't have a PCI card in
the works.

The CNC control software vendors will have to embrace the new I/O standards
or be left running
on outdated hardware. It's that simple.
