Some brass tubing may work, but the ID and OD have to be very close to
correct, which makes the walls of the tubing VERY thin.

Most of the soft-shell connectors have an internal recess that the wings
of the pin sits in.

where * is the plastic and / & \ are the wings. Your tube will have
to get down the inner diameter.

A small flat jewelers screwdriver can often be used to push the wings
out of the way. In a pinch, raiding your wife's sewing supplies might
find a suitable needle that will work as well.

Resist the temptation to PUSH it out ... you'll bugger up the inner
recess. The next pin then won't sit square in the hole and inserting
the mating connector will be a lot harder.

If it doesn't come out easily by pulling on the wire, you're not done
pushing on the wings yet.
