Hi, well good question. a home switch is where you send the machine to find
this switch, and that gives you a known location to start from.
a limit switch tells your controller the axis is gone as far as you want. It
may also make the controller do "emergency Stop", or simply prevent the axis
from mooving any further in that direction. there are many diffferent ways
that a limit switch is used. Most common is to prevent an axis from running
into something such as the end of the screw,frame of machine,or maybe just
save travel time on that axis. good example is a surface grinder, you set
the limit so the wheel just clears the part instead of moving the axis full
length back and forth...some grinders have very long tables. one i used to
run had a 8 foot table but most of the parts they ground were less than 2
feet long. the limit switch saved the table from mooving 12 feet on every
pass of the grind, a considerable savings of time..cul brian f.
