Ron,
That mill USED to be imported by Clausing. Bill Machrone has a write up
on it at
http://www.zdnet.com/yil/content/depts/billsbest/thatlas.html
The Sherline mill is mine, and I had a LOT of discussions with Bill on how
to change the Z axis (He already has a nice write up on how to fix up the X
and Y).
We came up with about 3 or 4 ideas. The one _I_ thought was best (But we
could not find the parts for) was to pull the Z axis rack out of the mill,
and toss it away, put an ACME tread rod in it's place. THEN (and this was
the part we could not find) put a pinion gear that mates with the acme rod
(sort of like the gear on the bottom of a threading dial) in place of the
one that mates with the rack now. Put a lock to prevent the fast feed
handle from turning. If you rotate the acme rod, you get the fine measured
feed, and if you unlock the present fast feed handle, it still give you
fast feed.
Of course, if your going CNC, you could just pull the rack, and put the
ball screw there, and just attach it to the back
