Hi Jan,
FWIW, Emco-Maier used tapered roller bearings in the spindles of
their small production CNC machines. These are 5C sized spindles
that run at 5 or 6K rpm.
I still have an expensive pair of bearings that I've never gotten
around to installing. Aside from the removal of the spindle and the
normal wrenching, it takes quite a bit of time to adjust these using
the factory method. "run at 300rpm, for 2 hours, check end play and
temp, if ok, run at 800 rpm for 2 hours, etc, etc, etc, etc" until
you get them running at top speed without heat buildup. A tedious
procedure....
