on the acme is what keeps the axis in place and gives your arm something to
work against to make a smooth cut. Ball screws have very little drag and
cutting forces will push it all over the place. I suppose you could add some
friction.
I use the low cost 1/2 inch Thompson with the single path and get about 4
thou backlash.
