There is a problem with the memory architecture on the 486 and below.

the shared memory is allocated between the RT and Linux sections of
EMC. But, yes, EMC will run in 4 MB with the character-cell GUI
keystick. It may run on Red Hat 5.2 with the XEMC GUI in Xwindows,
but you'd better not run anything else. With 8 MB, you can probably run
the TkEMC GUI in X, if you restrict yourself to only one extra window
for editing.
But, don't expect Mandrake 8.2 or the latest BDI CDROM to work well
on an 8 MB machine. And, it may not even install on a 486.
