Under Windows NT, 2000, and I assume XP, you can't access the hardware
registers from a user-mode program. You need a DLL or VXD which runs
in real mode to access these.

There is a program called DirectIO that bridges this barrier, allowing
even DOS programs to access the printer port from a DOS window
under NT and 2000. I have not gotten DirectIO to work with all
programs, but it makes quite a few of them work just like under
Win 3.1 or 95.
