The object of having the debris loose (air spaces between chips), is
that it's not as likely to heat internally to the point of spontaneous
combustion. The air, allowed to circulate, actually helps keep it cool.
Wetting the debris would compact it, and generate a great deal of
heat, kinda like a compost pile. But. as others have mentioned, it's
safest to clean daily, and store the debris outside of the building in
a fireproof container.
