A year or 2 ago when I was asking Fred about the setting he told me that
in machine use only the default acceleration is used and suggested
setting the max = default. He explained that the reason for a default
and max was in robotics where they have command codes to alter it on the
fly. In G-code there is no way to specify that it should run anything
other than the default acceleration.

More along the lines of the question, I find an acceleration around 2 to
work well on my G320 drives driving Bridgett (Bridgeport Series II so
lots of mass to accelerate).
