Well, I think maybe the trick is to set that axis of whatever encoder
counter you are using to reset
to zero on the index pulse. That way, the counter doesn't need to know
the number of counts/rev.
(The software does need to know, of course.)

I think the 7166 chip can do this, but I know my FPGA counters have this
option.
