Got to disagree with you on this point, although I will agree that servos
are more work and more expensive when using an analog type drive. When using
step and direction type drives, (ie gecko, rutex) the performance gains far
outweigh the extra hour required to set them up. Also price wise, good DC
servo motors with encoders can be had on ebay for the same price or less
than a stepper of the same torque, especially when talking about high torque
steppers. Stepper and servo drives are about the same price from gecko. A
stepper may lose steps without any feedback to the controller unless you
have encoders hooked up, and not many step and direction controllers support
encoders. So for the same price, an extra hour to set them up, and the cost
of the extra wire for the encoders you get superior performance, and a
feedback loop that you can wire to the parallel port to let the controller
know if something is amiss. In your case steppers may be a better choice,
but I would recommend servos over steppers every time for someone who is
starting from scratch and owns no parts yet. When I switched from steppers
to servos I couldn't believe the performance increase.
