Help a confused newbie out please

I am quite new to CNC and was curious if I wired switches at the
limits of each axiis travel and have the software setup to ramp the
acceleration up/down........Would the motors stop suddenly when the
limit switch is activated and an Estop is instructed?
Or would the motors ramp the motors down to a stop when the switch
is hit, thus crushing the switch and possibly warping my new
ballscrews or worse?
What is the correct way of setting up limit switches?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jim
