George, The tubing is just plain hot rolled seamed structural
rectangular box section, nothing fancy at all.
I have kept the ratio 1:1 and have fitted the original Taig dials to
the outboard end of the stepper drive. I have purposely not refitted
the handles to the same end as I didn't want anything that could
interfere whilst under CNC control but I have fitted knurled knobs
that allow the stepper to be turned by hand.
The knobs and dials can be seen clearly in the 3rd and 4th photo's
from the end.
I also didn't want to alter the mill in any way so if needed the
stepper drive can be removed and the dials and hand wheels replaced.
I went for the stepped lower drive as I didn't want an expended drive
system, I wanted to keep the width down as much as possible.

The HTD drive belt arrangement was chosen to help in this width
problem and also because two pullies and a belt were cheaper that a
straight thru drive coupling!!
