MUCH HARDER. and just as easy.
stepper motors spin somewhat freely until you tie any 2 wires that
are in the SAME circuit together. then, as the motor BEGINS to turn,
it develops enough voltage to lock itself in place.
pick a wire, and wire........
systematically touch it to any other wire and spin the shaft.
repeat until the motor locks up. put those two wires aside.
repeat 3 more times.
verify the ohms in each loop. they should all be the same.
verify an open circuit between all other wire pairs for each pair.
this is to prevent the driver from blowing up.
put 2 pairs (4 wires ) aside. put a wire nut on each wire to keep
individual wires seperate.
using the other two pairs,
connect them to your driver board. this method will use full amps.
reverse direction by switching on pair, wire A for wire B, leaving
the other pair connected.
tape off the 4 unused wires.
you can spend a lot of time testing the motors for verifying each
matched pair set, but it is more trouble than it is worth. I think
you get 3% more out of the stepper, but a higher voltage power supply
will kick a$$ in comparison.
Check the manufacturers site to see if they have color codes.
that's it.
