Sorry, but this is 100% incorrect. G201 drives use the step and
direction pins as the ground. The complete circuit is +5 feed from PC
through the optos and back to the parallel port as the ground. The
current flows and the optos light when the step or direction pin are low
(ground).
There is nowhere to connect a ground from the PC and if you try you will
cause problems.
The G210 is a little different. The default and recommended setup is
like the G201. Optionally you can reverse the optos with some internal
jumpers on the pulse board and now you connect it to ground on the
common instead of +5. The current then flows from the step or direction
pins when they go high to the ground.
Using the +5v as the common seems to be a concept that just throws many
people in a tizzy and they can't get their head around it. It is
absolutely no different than using ground as common other than the
current flows the opposite direction.
