I have a Pentium II 300MHz machine with similar weirdness.
Occaisional interrupt latency on the order of 30mS. It was
losing serial link characters (overrun) even at 2400 baud.
Switched to a 233MHz Pentium, identical software, runs
fine at 115,200 baud. I'm guessing it's a funky motherboard,
although I'll investigate some more before I scrap it.
