The "rack" on the Shoptask, and every other mill/drill that I've
ever seen, is simply teeth cut into the quill. There's nothing to slit.

The "common" Shoptask solution for people who want very repeatable Z
axis positioning, is an external ball screw drive, with a stepper or
servo driving the screw.
